The Best Baby Sunscreen
You're well aware that sunscreen can be used any day of the year. When it comes to sunscreen for babies, especially infants, the rules are a little more complicated.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that parents apply a small amount of baby-safe sunscreen to the face, backs of the hands, and tops of the feet to newborns and babies under 6 months with an SPF of 30–50 (no lower than SPF 15). If your baby is 6 months or older, use a baby-safe sunscreen with an SPF of 30–50 on all exposed areas of his or her body.
What exactly is the good news? It shouldn't be too complicated to keep a baby out of direct sunlight during his first summer. “Unless you have a kid who is well ahead of their developmental milestones, they aren't agile and running around,” says Bernard Cohen, M.D., professor of pediatric dermatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “Keep them covered by using a shade tent, an umbrella, and sun-protective clothing.” If you're at the beach, be aware that the sun will bounce off the sand or water and into your otherwise shady spot.
